A History of Feminist Art

Although there are earlier examples of feminist art, the feminist art movement really started to come to fruition in the 1960s and 70s, during the second wave of feminism. This is the period where we first begin to see art described as being ‘feminist’.

This period in the late 60s and early 70s is credited as the start of the movement, though there are works of art that predate this that are often retrospectively considered to be early feminist art.

Most early feminist work is labelled so due to the artist’s devotion to realistic female representation. Works by the likes of Frida Khalo, featured in this print by Studio Cockatoo, in the early 1900s are now considered to fall into this category of early feminism, and are seeing a resurgence in popularity as more and more modern feminist artwork mirrors the bold and inspiring nature of these early, often female, artists.

The movement really arrived in 1971 when art historian Linda Nochlin published a groundbreaking essay that would go on to shape the feminist art movement. Entitled ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ Nochlin’s essay studied and challenged the social and economic boundaries that were holding back talented female artists. We still see evidence of this influence through modern art prints posing the same questions raised by Nochlin, over 50 years later.
