Tartagain, they/them

If you are unfamliar with our highlight artist of the month, Tartagain, then we have to say you are missing out. If you're into groovy, indie and illustrative art then Tartagain may be the Artist for you! With their bold colours and love for patterns Tartagain really brings the fun into any space. We had the pleasure of asking them a few questions about what we are dying to know, read on to see what we found out.

Let's start off with a little bit about your background, can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello everyone! I’m Tartagain, but you can call me Lana. I’m a digital artist and surface pattern designer. I have been a digital artist since 2018. I love to create; it’s my passion. I can’t live a day without creating something. Before I started my career as an artist I had been enjoying photography a lot. I like to play video games, watch anime, and crocheting.

What are some of the thoughts or influences that are fuelling the direction of your current design work?

Mental health awareness has had a significant impact on me. The last 3-4 years have been a rollercoaster ride almost for everyone. I hope to brighten up our world and create more art pieces for people to have in their homes. Art is both magical and healing. The colours can boost your mood and make you calm; the shapes can captivate your attention from negative thoughts; and fun and positive affirmations can always remind you about what is important to you. So I combine all of this magic—colors, shapes, and positive vibes—to make something meaningful.

Who are your favourite inspirational artists, makers or thinkers and why?

All creative individuals inspire me so much, regardless of their artistic medium. I firmly believe that as creators, we share a profound non-verbal invisible connection with one another. Our ability to inspire and support each other transcends direct communication.

What impact would you like your artwork to have on people?

I want to people feel safe through my art.

What is your favourite piece of art from your collection?

It’s so hard to choose just one! I love them all equally. But! I've chosen the Tigers in Red Boots from our collection of art prints with you. They appear so confident and sassy (in a good way). I get a pure serotonin boost just by looking at them. And people really like them!

Do you have a dream project that you would like to work on?

Yes, I do! Every season, I'd like to create a capsule collection of home decor, wall art, accessories, and clothing with a specific theme. It would be a lot of fun, and it would be a great way for me to take a break from digital work and try something new. And I've always wanted to work as an art director for an alternative fashion brand. I adore Isamaya Ffrench, and she inspired me to give it serious thought. And I like Beepy Bella's imaginative work. I love their project “Welcome To Beepy Academy”. It expanded my horizons of what I want to create in the future.

How does your gender identity feed into your artwork, if at all?

Great question! Yes, it feeds into my artwork for sure! Here is an example of how I speak through a popular art trend to my fellow non-binary people. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish the whole collection of LGBTQIA+ color auras, thanks to my depression. ??

What does ‘Pride’ mean to you?

For me, Pride is a celebration of who you are e-v-e-r-y day. It’s pure love. It’s acceptance of other people. I love Pride Month because so many people share their stories, and I learn so much from it. Pride is definitely important to me, and I will always protect queer people.
