Newstalgia: What Is This New 2022 Home Trend?

18th Aug 2022

Now you’ve probably heard of nostalgia, but what is newstalgia, and why is this trend tipped to be the next big thing? Explore our Pop Culture collection here.

Newstalgia is all about blending the old with the new and it’s expected to be the next big home decor trend with it already starting to appear in houses around the world.

The style is considered to bridge a gap between Japandi and Cottagecore styles that were both popular in 2021, with chunkier furniture and vintage decor expected to be at the heart of it.

Those inspired by the style when updating their homes and spaces are taking elements of the old and the traditional and blending them with new modern stylings for a space that has the appeal of retro fashion and the comfort of modern design.

Where To Start With Newstalgic Design

Upcycled furniture and Scandinavian design are emerging as key elements of this trend. Those decorating their spaces are sourcing preloved furniture and decor from charity shops and online marketplaces and giving it a new (modern) lease of life.

Modern decor elements, like newstalgic art prints, are easier to source online and mean you can find the perfect print to compliment your unique finds. You can browse libraries of thousands of prints inspired by the 70s, 80s, and right up to ultra-modern designs to find the perfect piece and even order it in the best size to truly compliment your space.

Much of the appeal of the newstalgia trend is that it is a fairly sustainable style. You are combining both the brand new and the preloved to create a space that truly fits your style and knowing that some of your favourite decor pieces have been around for many years can make the style hold a real sentimental value for some.

Why Newstalgia?

So why the excitement for this new trend? Well, the theory is that it creates a good balance and the different elements bring a real sense of life to your space. You’re mixing the nostalgic retro looks with the comfort of modern decor, and this can bring lightness and vibrance to a room.

This trend is flexible in that anything really can be seen as part of this newstalgia style of decorating your home. It’s not quite minimalist or plain and it’s not cosy cluttered spaces, it’s more curated clutter with meaning because you’re getting the best parts of lots of different styles and making them work together.

Newstalgia Decor

The most common approach to newstalgia is old or retro furniture and modern decor. Older furniture tends to be of a fairly good quality which means it can be upcycled again and again and still hold its own.

Prints and other decor don’t necessarily last as well. There are some antiques and ornaments that can do quite well in retaining their charm but pictures and paintings tend to not be preserved as well as furniture. It’s mostly advised to look at modern prints to compliment your older better quality furniture.
