The New Hippie

The New Hippie

13th Jun 2023

As festival season rolls around and Glastonbury around the corner, we are once again reminded of the ever present 'Hippie'. From flared trousers to tree-hugging, we will be exploring the revival of this New age Hippie.

What is the ‘New Hippie’?

You may have seen them at your local flower market or allotment, with macrame bags and linen skirts. Or frolicking through fields reading tarot, taking psychedelics and looking to the stars.

The "New Hippie" design trend has emerged as a vibrant and eclectic approach to interior decor. The resurgence of fashion choices that we thought we would never see again and bringing a modern twist to the bohemian and free-spirited style of the 1960s and '70s. The New Hippie embraces a sense of harmony, nature, and individuality, creating spaces that exude a laid-back and whimsical charm - or as some people may say, they believe in a lot of 'woo'.

Why are people adopting this lifestyle?

It’s easy to see why people are turning their focus to more natural ways of life. After the pandemic and the rise in the climate crisis has resulted in an appreciation for the earth and this is at the forefront of a lot of people's minds.

During a time of social disconnect due to technological advancements a lot of people have a renewed desire to care, nurture and connect.

How to adopt the ‘New Hippie’ lifestyle;

Interior decor is a great way to express this style. Look at incorporating organic elements into your design. The ‘New Hippies’ loves incorporating natural materials and earthy textures. Think reclaimed wood, rattan, jute, and bamboo. These materials add warmth and authenticity to the space, creating a connection to the natural world. Another element the New Hippie trend embraces is a love for a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces. Mid-century modern furniture blends seamlessly with cozy, oversized bohemian sofas and floor cushions. Layered textiles like macrame wall hangings, colourful rugs, and embroidered fabrics add a touch of texture and visual interest. Anything to make you feel reminded by Mother Earth

Choose your colour palette wisely. Warm, earthy tones such as terracotta, ochre, olive green, and deep browns create a grounding effect. Juxtaposed this with accents of vibrant hues like turquoise, burnt orange, and mustard yellow. Try to capture the essence of nature's diversity. These pops of colour inject energy and a sense of playfulness into the overall design.

Plants play a vital role in the New Hippie aesthetic, bringing the beauty of nature indoors. Lush greenery, such as hanging plants, potted ferns, and cascading vines, breathe life into the space while purifying the air. Large leafy plants like monstera or fiddle-leaf figs make bold statements, while smaller succulents and cacti add pops of greenery to shelves and windowsills.

One of the last ways you can incorporate this aesthetic into your life is through our favourite means - prints! Prints allow you to apply all aspects of the 'New Hippie' into your life and decore. From plants to festivals to star signs, prints cover it all. Need some inspiration?
