PICK ME UP 2015: OUR TOP PICKS (Part 1 of 2)

Posted by Rebeca Romero on 29th Apr 2015

The 6th edition of PICK ME UP Graphic Arts Festival 2015 is on at Somerset House. Featuring the work of 12 rising stars on PICK ME UP SELECTS as well as a number of illustration collectives and galleries offering fresh, fine and fun art works at affordable prices. A great collection alltogether of London-based and international young art.

My Favourite Picks from this edition are the works of 2 female artists. Laura Callaghan and Sara Andreasson.

Laura Callaghan

Laura, originally from Ireland, now lives and works in South East London, since graduating from an MA in Illustration at Kingston University in 2010. Her work is largely hand-painted using watercolour, Indian ink and isograph pen, and depicts fearless women in colourful, maximalist environments.

I love Laura's bright and beautiful images, portraits of strong women and female relationships. A great attention to detail and a 90's colour and pattern palette made her works by far, my favourites of the festival.

Sara Andreasson

Swedish illustrator Sara originally spent six years studying engineering and furniture design before focussing entirely on illustration. Her new-found love for image-making is reflected in her curious and experimental approach, where cut-out shapes in bold colours and simple details are recurring elements.

Sara's colour block style makes me think of a modern Matisse. I love the fact that with out getting into detailed pieces she is able to deliver so much information about a situation or a mood. A work that screams contemporaneity in the most serene of the ways.

Also as a part of the Festival Anthony Peters's MADE YOU LOOK documentary is being screened for the first time in London . "Made You Look sets out to explore the landscape of the commercial arts in the 21st Century. It’s a film that gives an insight into how modern creative people feel about the challenges and triumphs of living in a hyper digital age" Check out the trailer here:

With a great program packed with talks, interactive activities and halls full of probably some of the hottest graphic art in town, Pick me up is one not to miss, running until May 4th at Somerset House, London
