The process of modern metallic foiling is achieved by applying foil, heat and pressure to paper. Foiling can be concentrated to a stamped or screen-printed design to give an image or impression of an artists design in shiny metallic. Early foil stamping was done using hand-set lettering or custom engraved dies. Because foil stamping was so labour intensive, early foil stamping was primarily restricted to book covers and literary titles.
