INTRODUCING: ROCKET 68
Posted by Rebeca Romero on 7th Mar 2015
Rocket 68 is designed & run by Illustrator and designer Jill White. Jill has been in the design world for 24 years
and particularly enjoys using traditional media alongside the digitally produced designs. We had lovely chat with
her and here is what she told us about her work, inspiration and being a freelance illustrator in London.
My mother is an artist, and from a very young age I knew that was what I wanted to do, I wanted to be an illustrator
and never entertained the thought of doing anything else!
Growing up in the West Indies was such a vibrant and inspirational atmosphere to grow up in, and I loved colour and
painting from a very young age. I studied Natural History illustration and my style has really 'evolved' over the last 20
years. Over that last few years I have taken inspiration from 'retro' and particulary 1950's and 1960's illustration.
Far from my days of painting very tight detailed pieces, I now adore simple bold shapes and pared down prints, such
as Luchienne Day's work and contemporary artists like Ineluxe.
I have worked in design companies, been freelance and now lecture part time, and if I could give any advice to young
illustrators/designers starting out, it would be: don't be 'defeatist' if someone doesn't like your work, just move on to the
next one, and keep drawing and improving and showing off your work, someone will appreciate it! It's so easy these days
with the internet to showcase your work, as in my early years as an illustrator I recall dragging a heavy portfolio round the
length and breath of the London Streets!
