If you’re going to invest in art prints then it makes sense to take the time to ensure that you’re going to get the most from them when they’re on the wall. Abstract prints are ideal for many homes because they come in a very wide range of different colours and styles. They can be created in paint or collage, as well as photography and illustration. You can group together lots of similar styles of abstract art or buy separate and distinct pieces. So, there are very few rules when it comes to the art prints that you buy but how do you make sure that they look as stylish as possible in your home?
What is abstract art anyway?
It’s basically anything that doesn’t represent reality. For example, a photo of a plant would not be abstract but a painted interpretation of the same plant that wasn’t an exact copy of it would be. Abstract art is designed to generate a feeling in the viewer and there is plenty of scope for subjective appreciation. With abstract art it’s about presenting a concept and then leaving that open to the interpretation of the person looking at the piece. Given that abstract art can be so open to interpretation, these are some tips on how to display these art prints in the best possible way in your home.
●Think about the feeling that the piece generates. You don’t have to have a qualification in fine art to be able to do this - just stand and look at the art print. Think about the feeling that you want to have in each room, for example calm in the bedroom or inspirational in your home office.
●Match the art to your existing style and colour schemes. If you’re keen to make your art prints consistent with what’s already in the rooms then look at how the colours in the print compliment other tones in the space. If your art print has a lot of colours then pick one or two of the dominant ones and use those as your guide.
●Choose an accent colour. This is one colour that is used frequently - but sparingly - throughout your home and especially when it comes to choosing abstract art. So, for example, you might choose a shade of banana yellow to be your accent colour and opt for abstract prints that have a small amount of this tone somewhere in each piece.
●Ensure the piece is placed somewhere space appropriate. For example, a tiny piece of artwork on a big, empty wall is going to look a little odd. You can either choose to fill up a big wall with small pieces arranged together, gallery style, or opt for a large abstract art print that will fill the entire wall. Large prints often make a space feel bigger while a collection of prints adds detail.
●Make the art print the focal point. If you’ve found a piece that you particularly love then why not design the entire space around it.
Abstract art can be inspiring and joyful, calming and meditative - get it right in terms of where you hang it and your home will be stylish as well as interesting. EastEndPrints’ store on Brick Lane and online shop are both to have plenty of options to add some abstract art prints to your home.
