What is Black History Month?
For 30 years, in the month of October, countries around the world have celebrated and continue to celebrate Black History Month. Originally, Black History Month in the UK was focused on recognising the contributions of those with African and Caribbean backgrounds. The month now celebrates and recognises the excellent contributions of the wider black community.
During this month, schools, communities and galleries shine a light on black excellence and acknowledge the great impact that black communities have had in the UK. There is an additional focus on the tremendous talent of black artists and musicians and taking time to appreciate the impact of this history on modern Britain.

Celebrating Black History Through Art
Black and minority artists are a crucial part of the creative community. Black artists have been making significant contributions to the art world in the UK for decades. Overcoming challenges related to visibility and access, these significant works have provided insight and a voice for the black community in times when the mainstream media, on the whole, did not.
The British Black Arts movement dates back to the early 1980s when a generation of young artists looked to examine gender and anti-race discourse. Originating in Wolverhampton and extending to the rest of the Midlands, the BLK Art Group inspired much of this movement. Keith Piper, Marlene Smith, Eddie Chambers, Claudette Johnson and Donald Rodney were important figures that greatly contributed to its success.
Although talented black artists have always been producing phenomenal work, this movement was able to influence more mainstream British culture. This led to works that elevated black culture in the arts and media in the years following.
As well as providing important social commentary, our community of talented artists are creating gorgeous work celebrating culture and creativity.
These art prints are the perfect addition to any home and the gorgeous illustrations and vibrant colours that make up the designs in our Black History Month collection are sure to add a new life to your home, office or anywhere else you think could do with some beautiful art.
