Posted by East End Prints on 11th Sep 2024
Now that the afternoons are beginning to darken and the air is increasingly chilly, we all feel the need to batten down the shutters a little and enjoy a cosy retreat. Lighting, colour and texture are all key ways in which we can introduce comfort into our homes, and some of these are easy ways to make the most of the cosiest season of all.

What Makes A Room Cosy?
With the skies becoming grey and dark by mid-afternoon, lighting can create a real sense of warmth in your home and can help to emphasise the colours and styles of the art you have in each room.
Try moving away from the starkness of a bright ceiling light and choose instead some softer lights using floor and table lamps. You could even try changing your bulbs to softer-coloured smart bulbs that you can dim to create a relaxing atmosphere. Candles can also provide a softer, cosier option and create a real sense of Hygge.
When it comes to fabrics, stick to earthy, autumnal colours and natural materials such as chunky wools and cottons for layered rugs, throws and cushions.
The addition of these warmer tones is a surefire way to introduce a sense of comfort. Warm creamy colours, taupes, autumnal oranges, yellows and reds and even warmer greens can help create that warm and cosy feeling.
Using Warming Colours For Cosiness
Warm Autumn colours are the obvious choice when creating a cosy space to retreat to in the colder months, but which are the most effective?
When we think of Autumn we picture crunchy fallen leaves, fireplaces and even things like pumpkins and seasonal foods. What many of these have in common are the warming orange hues that we almost always associate with the cosy season. There’s no surprise really that these colours are the most impactful when it comes to cosy art and decor.
Red can be an energetic colour and might help to combat the tiredness brought on by those dark afternoons. In your home, opt for a muted version such as red ochre or berry tones to encourage warm and cosy feelings. There are plenty of art prints in our collection that will help you subtly introduce these hues into your relaxing space.

Balance is incredibly important, too much orange can feel overly intense, so a little goes a long way when it comes to adding these autumnal elements. Orange is another high-energy colour but when used in small accents and in lighter or muted shades such as rusty terracotta and coral, can convey a feeling of warmth and support.

Yellow is a proven mood-enhancing colour and yellow art prints can provide some of these benefits. It is associated with cheeriness and warmth and is a perfect addition when choosing elements to make your rooms feel cosy in the Autumn and Winter months. Like orange, too much can be overstimulating and psychologists suggest it can enhance feelings of fatigue so avoid very bright versions and choose instead paler yellows and mustards or prints where yellow acts as an accent.
